I'm writing a letter
Dear Jeff,
I am writing a letter to you to discuss your betting habits. I checked in with the chat last night and noticed that you were betting two bets on one game - an over and Xavier to cover the spread. In fact, this was a "parlay". Not knowing exactly what that was, I logged into my "Sportsbook" account and entered this bet.
Thank you for this piece of information. I have won my bet.
I would like to sign up for your weekly newsletter.
Sincerely,
Moose

What the hell just happened?
Alright, so we're watching the Iona-BYU game last night and rolling with the over at 162.5. I mean, Iona loves to run and gun and averages over 83 points a game. BYU also loves the transition game and averages around 80 points a game, so this seemed like a solid bet. You know when it seemed like an even more solid bet? When Iona was up 55-40 at half! Yep, that's right Kid's last text of the night to me was, "good half!" So we've got it on lock-down, right?
Kid, draft a letter. Actually, draft two letters. The first letter to BYU head coach Dave Rose (note: NOT Fat Lavin... what the happened to Fat Lavin?), who finally figured out that he couldn't run with Iona, so his slower, taller team should slow the game down, work the ball into the post and, perhaps most importantly, went to a zone that Iona just couldn't figure out. YOU SCREWED US, ROSE! Kid... letter... now!
The second letter goes to the entire Iona coaching staff and team. I've spent the last week or so hearing about how Iona was really good and needed to be in the NCAA tournament even though they lost Fairfield in the MAAC Semifinals after... wait for it... Fairfield went to a zone defense and slowed Iona down!!! Iona had 10 days to figure out how to get shots against a 2-3 zone and failed to do so. What exactly were they doing for the last week plus? Clubbing in Manhattan? Studying for finals? He he he. Anyway, congrats to the Gaels who ran up 55 in the first half, held a 25 point lead at one point, and then tanked it away by scoring a whopping 17 points in the second half while BYU's token chubby, balding white guy Noah Hartsock (Noah? Really?) just killed the Gaels with jumper after jumper after jumper followed by one dagger of a three to finally take the lead. Kid... letter!
And congrats to Brandon Davies who hit his over (2.5) of how many co-eds he would get with before the game ended. All that work is finally starting to pay off.
Regardless of the failed over (the game ended at 150, by the way) if last night was a harbinger of things to come, this tourney may be head-exploding insane! BYU comes back from 25 down, and in the first game, Western Kentucky came back from 16 down with 4 minutes left to beat Mississippi Valley State by one! Amazing game, and this sets up a Western Kentucky-Kentucky match-up in Louisville. Louisville... a spot 90 minutes from WKU's campus and in a city that absolutely HATES UK. Interesting. If I were Moose, I'd be rooting for Kentucky, but since I am the anti-Moose, and am convinced Flaming Calipari is about to win his first National Title (and 3rd vacated Final Four appearance), I will root against all my brackets where I picked UK, and hope that the Hilltoppers, helped out by a hostile crowd, take out Calipari and his NBA all stars!
MADNESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Aaaaand they're off! FOURVENTEENTH!
Let the games begin! Western Kentucky starts off against Mississippi Valley State at UD Arena. No bets on this one, but, amazingly, it seems like it might be a good game. We're only 5 minutes in though.
Fun side notes... The winner of this game gets Kentucky, so you're going to see WKU v. UK in Louisville or MVSU, coached by UK alumSean Woods against UK. Either way, a 1-16 game with a huge storyline. Thus supporting my hypothesis that this is the tourney of forced storylines by the Selection Committee. More to come on that topic...
P.S. Really Fab Melo? Well done... Sorry 'Cuse...

a sad few
You might think that there are many systems biologists that care about basketball, but no, Dave and I are sitting alone in the bar at cold spring harbor watching games on our computers and on the TVs.... on silent. I am waiting for someone to scream obscenities... not likely. I miss you guys.
The Madness has Started
Well, we are not in the same place, but due to the advent of modern technology, we will be able to stay in touch! God Bless the Gchat...yep, I am pimping my Bro-in-laws company!
Anyway, CS North jumped out to a big lead, but it looks like Memphis is coming back. It would be sweet to see CS North beat Memphis. Most importantly, it is going to be sweet to see the Madness. I cannot wait for Moose to officially declare Madness! It is only a matter of time.
Gus Johnson
A highlight reel... if you will. I wonder how much insanity we'll get today?!
